TBLC - Call for Abstract Reminder!

Abstracts due September 30, 2011

The Team-Based Learning Collaborative (TBLC) is a group of educators dedicated to supporting faculty from a variety of disciplines who wish to implement team-based learning. Our recent conferences have included educators from a range of backgrounds, including medical education, other health-related disciplines, graduate and undergraduate education and from K-12 education. We have benefited from everyone’s experience and wisdom as we strive to share teaching resources and promote the dissemination, evaluation and scholarship of team-based learning.

We invite you to the 11th Annual Conference on Team-Based Learning in Higher Education. The Annual Meeting presentations take the form of plenary presentations, workshops, oral presentations, and posters. This year’s meeting will be March 2-3, 2012 in St. Petersburg, Florida, with pre-meeting workshops on March 1st.

You are invited to submit proposal abstracts on any topics relevant to team-based learning. We are asking for three different types of abstracts for three of our tracks. These include the following:

Fundamentals track – for novices to TBL to help them learn the essential skills to get a TBL program started at their own institution. An example might include a workshop on facilitation techniques, or “How to Write Good Readiness Assurance Tests”

Innovations track – for those who are experienced with TBL to provide information about experiences with particular types of courses or learners or new or innovative techniques. An example might include a poster titled “A TBL Science Course for 9th Graders” or a workshop titled “How to start a Web-Based TBL Course”.

Research/Scholarship track – for those interested in presenting methods related to educational research or research studies about TBL. An example might be a workshop entitled “Getting a research program starting in your TBL course” or it could be an oral presentation in which you present research that you have done such as “Evidence of standardized test performance gains in Pharmacy students following implementation of a TBL curriculum”.

The deadline for submission of abstracts for Oral Presentations and Workshops is September 30, 2011. Abstracts for Poster presentations will be due December 15, 2011. Abstracts are to be submitted online at http://www.tblcmeeting.org . Below are brief summaries of the different types of abstracts. Each area has a hot link to an example of an abstract appropriate for the area.

1.) Oral presentations – this would be for 10-15 minute presentations of innovative projects or research. Sample oral abstract

3.) Workshops are 90 minutes or two hours and should be interactive. Sample workshop


Please note: "Workshops" are semi-structured learning sessions designed to facilitate interaction and collective learning. Unlike the lecture format, the interaction and discussion with the participants is expected to be extremely lively, and preferably in the TBL format. They will be given to smaller audiences and must demonstrate evidence of interactivity. We are looking forward to your submissions and hope to see you in St. Petersburg in 2012!
